Tess Majors was a Ratrock featured artist for the month of December 2019. We are all grateful to have helped document her passion for music and thoughts as an artist. It was truly a privilege to feature Tess and her work, and we hope that this page serves as a meaningful testament to her art and her spirit.
βHey Ratrock,
My name is Tess Majors, and I am class of 2023 at Barnard right now, although I am originally from Charlottesville. I am a songwriter and bassist specializing in alt-rock music.
Here is my artist statement:
I began playing music at the age of five, when my parents made me take piano lessons. I quickly picked it up, and by the time I reached highschool, I was playing guitar and bass as well. Growing up in the south, I often felt alienated by cultural norms and my peers. I had trouble connecting with other kids, and after my first romantic relationship ended, I was left feeling isolated.
I started writing songs as a way to express my frustration about my personal life. Music became a release for me, and I found that it gave me the voice I often felt scared to share in my daily life. By the end of sophomore year, I was regularly gigging around town, and I came to the stunning realization that audiences actually connected with my music. This really solidified my dreams of becoming a musician as a career.
I draw most of my influence from riot-grrrl bands of current day and also the 90s: Hole, Bikini Kill, Courtney Barnett, Sonic Youth, and Cherry Glazerr. This past summer, I released my first EP, which I wrote and recorded with my band, Patient 0. It expresses the rage of growing up and feeling constantly out of place, as teenagers often do, which earned it the tongue-in-cheek title, "Girl Problems." I am truly passionate about music and I would absolutely love to be featured in Ratrock, as I have an adoration for indie magazines and would love any platform to get my work out there.
Best,
Tess Majors
P.S., I am attaching the link to my album on Spotify, because I think it is the most effective way to showcase my work.β
